Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second daughter born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her political involvement, acting skills and ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the nickname "delicate, sensitive" when she was just eight years old. Latifah was a singer in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist church located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her first public performance when she sang "Home" as one of two Dorothys in the production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah was in the footsteps of her mother, who was in constant touch with the choir and the students. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was requested by Latifah's daughter to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King was invited to perform at a dance school.
