
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine who works as a laboratory technician and John Ormond. Ormond is the third of five children to her parents. Her first appearances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted attention. She later attended Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After a single year at arts school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art which she attended until 1988. Ormond made her first appearance on British television's 1989 series Traffik. It revolved around illicit heroin trade between the far East and the streets of Europe. Ormond was the addicted daughter of the lead character, who was a Home Office minister in the UK government fighting heroin importation. It was the first time Ormond had a role and was praised by the critics as a success.
